Project Horseshoe is an annual gathering of game designers trying to tackle tough design problems. Some of the working groups publish their results, which you can find below.

Game Theory Applied to Actual Games: The Nash Equilibrium Payoff Matrix as a Model for Multiplayer Behavior is specifically relevant for some of our projects this semester. There are several other good papers on designing multiplayer games as social interactions, designing to encourage friendship and collaboration, as well as fundamental systems design topics.
