Modular level design tutorial (Maya, Unity)

Modular level design is a method where you model a set of architectural pieces (walls, doors, corners, building pieces, etc) that can be combined together to form levels instead of modeling each level from scratch as a single environment in Maya. There are a number of advantages to this approach:
  • it lets you separate the 3D artist and Level Designer roles
  • You can edit the level easily in the game engine editor without going back to your 3D modeling app
  • It helps with procedural level generation
  • For large levels, particularly really big interiors, it helps optimize through the use of instancing or batching and visibility culling
  • Improvements to component pieces like tweaking geometry or textures will propagate through all the instances of that piece

I made a tutorial on how to make a modular level kit for Unity using Maya. It covers some essential poly editing techniques, UV mapping and editing, scene cleanup, FBX export, and using the pieces in Unity.
