Maya Basic Cheatsheet and Hotkeys

General mouse controls
Left mouse button (LMB) is used for selecting things
Right mouse button (RMB) is used for context pop-up menus
Middle mouse button (MMB) is used to connect nodes, apply materials, properties in the channel box, move points in animation curves, and other utility actions

Camera movement

Alt+LMB: Rotate
Alt+MMB: Pan
Alt+RMB: Zoom

: focus on selected object
a: frame all

Disable Scroll Wheel
if the scroll wheel on your mouse is too sensitive, so that you zoom in when you're trying to MMB pan:

1. go to Window->Settings and Preferences->Preferences
2. go to the "Interface" category
3. under "Devices", uncheck the box for "Mouse Scroll Wheel Enable"

Transform tools

q: pick tool
w: move tool
e: rotate tool
r: scale tool
t: "bonus" manipulator (extra controls for spotlights, etc)
y: repeat last tool

+, - : increase or decrease the size of the manipulator handles

Click the axis handle to move/rotate/scale only on that axis

Ctrl + click/drag: lock selected axis, move the others. For example, hold down Ctrl and click and drag the Y-Axis arrow on the Move Tool to move only on X and Z.

Duplicating, Parenting, and Grouping

Ctrl-d: Duplicate
Ctrl-g: Group
p: Parent

Parenting vs. Grouping: "Parent" makes one object a child of the other. "Group" creates a new transform node and puts all selected objects under it

View modes

4: wireframe
5: shaded
6: textured
7: lighting
8: opens the PaintFX editor

Display smoothness

These options turn on different levels of smooth previewing for both Poly and NURBS objects. They don't affect actualy geometry, only the way it is displayed in Maya.

1: rough
2: medium
3: smooth

Layout and UI control

tap spacebar: expand a frame in the layout, or return to overall layout
hold spacebar: brings up the Hotbox menu control

Turn on and off different UI elements: Display->UI Elements

Select different layouts: select layout views from the toolbox on the left, or within a view pane, go to Panels->Save Layouts...

Open the Attribute Editor, the Channel Box, or the Tool Options panes:

Group, Object, and Component Editing

To edit components of an object (Component Mode)

R-click, hold down, drag to the component type you want to edit

To go back to Object Mode, R-click, drag to "Object Mode"

F8 also toggles between Object and Component Mode Editing

These three buttons switch between Group Mode, Object Mode, and Component Mode

Soft Select Component Editing

b: toggle soft select brush on/off

hold down b, click and drag to change radius of smooth brush

Increase/Decrease Selection Size

When selecting vertices, you can grow and shrink the selection:

> grow selection
< shrink selection

Pivot Point

hold down to move the pivot point
Insert: toggle pivot point move mode on/off

Modify->Center Pivot
: reset pivot point to center of object
